Gerard Way Interview with IGN.com

By Jesse Schedeen

Occasionally pop culture celebrities will dabble in the world of comic books. Even Mr. T had his own series for a while, and we wouldn’t have learned the virtues of drinking our milk without it. On the whole, these celebrity-penned books are forgettable and wind up in the bargain bins at your local comic shop. One recent and notable exception was Umbrella Academy. This mini-series was written by Gerard Way, the lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance. The book followed seven former child superheroes as they deal with life as adults and the death of their adopted father. The series sported a zany, Grant Morrison-esque feel that was well complemented by the stylistic visuals of Gabriel Ba. All six issues met with critical praise, including from our own Review Crew.

With the trade paperback now appearing on store shelves, we figured it was as good a time as any to give Way a call and find out how this strange series was born. Way told us about his early influences, his original dream of becoming a comic book artist, and how he eventually brought Umbrella Academy to Dark Horse. He also reveals some early details about the Umbrella sequels (yes, sequels). If you loved the original, 2008 will be the start of a beautiful friendship with the members of Umbrella Academy.

Gerard Way at San Diego Comic-Con

San Diego’s Comic-con is being called San Diego Monster-Con by promoters, advertisers and vendors alike.

With comic writers the likes of Nicolas Cage and his son Weston, as well as ours truely, Gerard; the Comic-Con is being attended in record numbers.

Some think this is good, others think this is bad.  Either way, Saturday, July 26, Gerard and Doom Patrol’s Grant Morrison speak in a panel entitled “Born Under a Black Sun.”

The official site says it’s completely sold out on this day.  We aren’t aware if Gerard will be there for the entire Comic-con or just that one day.

Gerard Way Talks to Comics Corner About The Umbrella Academy

Warning:   This interview is very long.

By Jeff Johncox for Comics Corner

Comics Corner – How did you get involved with Dark Horse and in making the “Umbrella Academy?”

Way: Well, I had really missed comics since starting the band and I guess I really wanted, in the beginning, we just really never stopped (playing). Once it took off and it was really exciting, I realized I hadn’t written or drawn anything comicwise, or bookwise, or anything. I hadn’t had a chance to be creative in that regard and I really missed it.

I started Grant Morrison’s “Doom Patrol,” because it started coming out in trades, and I was on tour and had just gotten sober and I had all of this free time. So I said “f— it, I’m going to write a comic.”

CC – Grant Morrison had a nice quote for you on the cover of the second issue. Have you always been a big fan of his?

Way: I have always been a big fan. Grant is great because if you get into cool comics, somebody shows you basically “Watchmen,” that’s the first one they show you. Then you get into Frank Miller and then your world opens up. From that point you can go one of two ways. You can still stick around mainstream superhero books or go into indies. Ultimately, you can find someone like Grant who is totally uncategorizable, if that’s a f—ing word. He’s somebody that’s right up the middle. He’s doing this very postmodern stuff. It doesn’t matter if it’s superheroes, it doesn’t matter if it’s hired assassins. It doesn’t matter … anything.

CC – I went the Warren Ellis route after Frank Miller

Way: Right. That makes sense, too. Because he’s another one of those guys, it’s more of the Vertigo type way.

That’s where I went. I got into (Neil) Gaiman and I got into Grant.

Grant ended up being my favorite author because he’s so willing to take risks. He’s so daring. He’ll take these characters and do anything he wants with them. You know, and he has a love for superheroes where a lot of people were either being cheeky with superheroes and doing parody or they were doing them so bland it was becoming a parody of itself anyway.

Grant, who has a true love of the silver age, had all these crazy ideas.

The Umbrella Academy Movie?

Ok long ago and far far away…

Ok I’m being stupid.  It’s no doubt by now you have seen the news about The Umbrella Academy becoming a movie.

We reported a few months ago (CLICK HERE TO READ) that Dark Horse had signed a deal with Universal to turn some of its comics into movies.  At the time Richardson (dark horse head honcho) said that there was interest in TUA for a movie but their first projects with Universal were already underway.

Now at some sort of awards show, Richardson revisits the idea of The Umbrella Academy becoming a movie (CLICK HERE to watch the interview).  Apparently it will happen eventually.  There is no mention of when or if Universal has signed on, its a vague explanation to say the least.

I said it and I will say it again.  I have always thought TUA would make a great movie!
