After releasing their new album, “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” pop rock giants My Chemical Romance set out on the World Contamination Tour, which included a North American leg in recent months. Much to the delight of local fans, the band was booked to perform at the Val Air Ballroom where they played to a sold out audience.

Memo to Gerard Way and the rest of My Chemical Romance: Being ordinary alternative rock stars doesn’t really suit you.
The band can deliver a conventional mix of punk energy and pop melody reasonably well, as they showed during their sold-out Friday night performance at the Aragon Ballroom, but the best moments in their 90-minute set came when they were musically and emotionally overwrought.

My Chemical Romance returned last year in fine form with “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” a CD that offered a significant turn from the band’s darkly hued 2006 rock opera, “The Black Parade.”
What fans didn’t hear was a CD the group recorded with acclaimed producer Brendan O’Brien that was scrapped before the group went on to record “Danger Days.” But bassist Mikey Way doesn’t see the CD as a failure.

The Denver Post has published a rather lackluster review of the band’s April 9 show at the Fillmore Auditorium. Here’s an excerpt:
My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way, adorned with bright red locks above his signature shocking eyes, celebrated his 34th birthday in Denver on Saturday night, along with a sold out crowd at the Fillmore Auditorium. While the party, itself, was plenty of fun, the musical accompaniment left a bit to be desired, and showed that his band appears to be stylistically lost.

You know how you forget about certain individuals you went to high school with years ago and then some random event will happen that’ll just flood you with memories? And it’s just like an “Oh yeah! Whoa, I totally forgot about so and so” moment? This was my overall feeling at My Chemical Romance (MCR), just on a much larger scale. The whole Hot Topic crowd is sort of a subculture that fades into the background after you don’t have to see them every day when you get to school. I completely forgot all about the enormous Black Parade movement that took place back during my sophomore year in high school. I guess I just assumed it was a passing phase. Turns out I was really wrong. These kids still exist – fingerless gloves, patchy, studded denim vests, and B.O. all intact.
