Fans of Emo and Goth fashion in Russia have protested against their government’s attempt to ban the look from schools. Dozens of people took to the streets yesterday (July 20th) in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk.
They argue that the proposed laws, which will also censor text messages, violate their freedom of speech.
“How can you stop people from expressing themselves, from dressing how they like, from living a way of life that doesn’t harm anyone?” one female protestor told the Associated Foreign Press.
‘Encourage Suicide’
Russian lawmakers are said to be fearful following media reports that the movement, which began in America in the 1980s, encourages suicide, REN TV television reports.
The proposals were given broad approval last month and are expected to be draft as law in the coming months.
Recently, a coroner in the inquest into the death of a teenage girl in the UK expressed his concern about her devotion to Emo music.
Roger Sykes’ comments, and the way they were reported by the media, led to protests in London from fans of the music genre.
