My Chemical Freak: My Chemical Romance All The Time

My Chemical Romance Fan Defense Growing

NME.com speaks to protest organizer.

My Chemical Romance fans’ march against The Daily Mail next weekend (May 31) could attract up to a thousand protestors, says the organisers.

As previously reported, fans of the band are set to march in London to protest against press misrepresentation of their heroes, especially in The Daily Mail.

Smith, who only began to organise the march last Friday (May 16), told NME.COM: “At my last check there were 426 entries on the list, but I’m expecting to have at least 500 by tomorrow evening (May 24). [The police] are asking for numbers and I’m thinking maybe I should say a thousand.”

Explaining that the march is “100% for My Chemical Romance” rather than emo music in general, Smith said: “The [Daily Mail's] words ‘suicide cult’ really stand out for me, because it’s just so far from the truth. As a fanbase it’s such an insult ’cause we fight so hard and so many of us suffer from depression, and we fight everyday to ward it off.

“The way [many teenagers are] fighting it is with My Chemical Romance’s help and it’s just such an insult to tell us that the last thing we have to hold on to and the last thing that’s keeping us alive is killing us, because it’s not.”

Smith directly attacked the Daily Mail’s suggestion that the emo group promotes suicide and self-harm, saying: “My Chemical Romance is my whole life and I take it very seriously, but at the same time the message that we’re taking seriously isn’t about death and how you should die and killing yourself and all that, it’s about how you should love life and experience every moment that you can.”

The march, set to begin at Hyde Park’s West Pond in central London, takes place on the afternoon of May 31.

To all the people who agree that MCR is the main cause of 13 year old, HANNAH BOND’S death, hope you guys eat your words when you see the MCR fans march at Hyde Park in central London this May 31, to protest against the press misrepresentation of my HEROES!!!
My Chem has shown nothing but concern to their fans, but don’t get me wrong. I’m not for the bad influence that EMO scattered around the world and I admit that they have, or for what they stand for, but I too
admit that I was once one. But I am for ANTI-EMO VIOLENCE and SUICIDE and so is the band.
They have always been against violence and suicide, since they’ve been through the same thing most of their fans went through, a rough childhood. They’ve also witnessed being an outcast, bullied, teased and even disliked just like most of the EMOs are.
At a hearing about her death Roger Sykes, the coroner who gave the verdict of suicide last May 7, suggested that the fact that Bond was an obsessive fan of such music was linked to her death.Bond had discussed with friends the “glamour” of suicide, and was obsessed with MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, which as you can see is the reason why they blamed MY CHEM. I don’t think it was fair that just because she liked MCR more than the other EMO bands she liked means they should go on blaming a band they completely don’t know about, aside from the fact they know she liked them and that their EMO. WAIT A MINUTE! Their not even EMO. They said it theirselves long before this happened. Her mom Heather Bond, said there were [emo] websites which she would always go to explaining: “There are websites that show pink teddies hanging themselves. She called EMO a fashion and I thought it was normal”. Why don’t they blame those or the bands who actually say their EMO and who are really. I don’t know. . The message and theme of their album ‘The Black Parade’ is hope and courage. Their lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on their album states: ‘I am not afraid to keep on living’ – a sentiment that embodies the band’s position on hardships we all face as human beings. Maybe i’m just coming from total anger, but still. Maybe the My chem songs are a bit weird, scary or creepy for a person who just heared them once and didn’t completely understand. Maybe the title of theirs songs give other people the creeps or the make up GERARD WAY puts on, but they don’t promote SUICIDE and VIOLENCE, if ever their even the type of band who promotes a non-violence thing. If you saw the TEENAGERS video you would know what i’m talking about. I don’t know maybe i’m not explaining this properly or it’s coming out the wrong way or the way I didn’t plan it to. Maybe you think i’m a total DICK HEAD for backing up the-so-called “CAUSE of SOMEONES DEATH”, i’m sorry for Hannah, really and seriously if I could I would attend her funeral and wake even though I’ve never met her once in my life. But if you’re one of the people who think just like the press or blame them as well, YOUR MAKING A BIG MISTAKE, because theres one thing I do know and its that your blaming the wrong guys, their NOT the ones to be blamed and that……….

I think it’s a bit hypocritical the the Mail can rant about how mcr is causing suicide and self-harm in teens everywhere then say bands can’t “actually change people’s lives”, essentially meaning it’s just pathetic to say mcr saved your life.
How does that work then?
If it can’t actually influence descisions in teens to cheer up and move on in life how the fuck can it convince them to die?
Total double standard.

My friend actually talked to Hannah, and he thought she was making serious progress. She’d stopped cutting, and had realised that people who told her she had to to be accepted were screwed up.
Then she stopped emailing him and said she “needed space to work some things through”.
We all thought she would recover.
No, i don’t know what caused any of that, she didn’t like to talk about it, she prefered to talk about how “emo” music had oppened a world of people who didn’t care if she had problems.

Hannah’s death hit my friend hard, and he’s slipped up a few times since.
I can’t believe the papers would use a death to continue their anti-mcr campaign.
It’s beyone belief.

This whole ‘anti-emo’ stunt in complete bullshit. I mean, really? Whoever wrote that original article must have been messed up and didn’t get their facts strait. My Chem’s whole message is to help people to get themselves out of depression, and the band is COMPLETELY against suicide. Since Gerard went through all of this before, why would he send postive messages about it? And, a suicide cult?! This is just unbelievable. Gerard has even stated that The Black Parade is about hope and courage, like chesca said. It is nothing about how you should kill yourself because you’re pouty. That’s basically what they’re trying to say that all of this is. Suicide is some serious buisness, it’s not about some ‘fashion’ and music genre. Hannah was obviously not happy with her life in some way, and her parents should have seen this before she killed herself. I mean, the girl was cutting her wrists! They saw this and thought nothing of this serious measure. If you ask me, they are just trying to find someone to blame so that they won’t feel so guilty for being able to have stopped this. Hannah even told her MOTHER that she was going to kill herself and her mother said, “dont be so silly”. I think the parents should be responsible, not a band who’s message is that you should love yourself! My thoughs and prayers go out to all that were affected by her death. But this…this is just ridiculous. My Chem’s not responsible for this at all. For me, I had met my two best friends and many other friends I have collected over 3 years. Yes, their songs are creepy and a little twisted but all of those vampires, shootings and deaths are metaphors for real life events that have made them stronger. The words are supposed to make us stronger, not break us down. Their message has actually saved lifes, and I don’t believe it would cause anyone to do the opposite. My Chemical Romance should not be in anyway involved in this, and it was wrong for anyone to blame them for this. It’s such a shame that everyone is looking for someone to blame for wrong doings.
