A teen girl obsessed with a “suicide cult” rock band, hanged herself two weeks after becoming an “emo”, an inquest heard today.
Talented karate artist and “model pupil” Hannah Bond, 13, and fan of controversial band My Chemical Romance, was found hanging from beneath her bunk bed with a tie in the early hours of September 23 at her family home in East Peckham.
She had several self-inflicted cuts in parallel fashion on her left wrist, which she told her dad was “an initiation into emo”, the inquest at Maidstone Coroners’ Court was told.
The petite, year nine pupil had in the months prior become obsessed with the teen trend (emo) - a popular fashion and lifestyle fad followed by kids who emulate the older ‘gothic’ crowd.
On her Bebo page Miss Bond, who used the online name Living Disaster and has internet friends with names like Sam Suicide, said she was obsessed with the hugely popular My Chemical Romance band, who hit number one with their last album, The Black Parade.
Her mother, Heather Bond, told the court how she learned The Black Parade is “where you go when you die” as she researched the emo fad.
She said: “The whole concept is aimed at people Hannah’s age.”
“In emo it is a very glamorous death to hang yourself.”
“There are websites that show pink teddies hanging themselves.”
“The band she was into, the music she was into – the whole thing is based on The Black Parade which is all about dying.”
“She called emo a fashion and I thought it was normal.”
“I didn’t know about the cuts. She used to wear emo bracelets so her wrists were concealed.”
“Hannah was just a normal girl.”
“She had loads of friends.”
“She could be a bit moody but I though it was just because she was a teenager.”
“In the months before she had become obsessed with the internet.”
“But there were no signs this was going to happen.”
“She had everything to live for.”
In a tribute book left at a shrine at her school following Miss Bond’s death a pal wrote: “I hope you enjoy The Black Parade.”
Her father, Ray Bond, a sensei at the Kyokushin Karate Club in Gravesend, where Hannah was a member, wept as he said: “Two weeks before her death, I saw the cuts. I asked her about them and we discussed how it was an emo initiation.”
“She promised me she would never do it again.”
“She was in in touch with emos all over the world, particularly from America, over the internet.”
“The night before she hanged herself she came into the room and gave me a big kiss and said ‘I love you, Dad’.”
In the hours before her death Miss Bond had been hanging out with her boyfriend and others at a pal’s home.
She had not phoned her parents for a lift home when she was supposed to, playing up after she was told she would not be able to sleep over.
Her mum and older sister Jessica picked her up more than an hour and a half later to find that Hannah was “hyper active”.
Heather said: “She was hyperventilating. She used to drink the energy drink Kick, I don’t know if it had to do with that. She said she wanted a cuddle, so I reached back to her.”
As Hannah entered her family home she said she wanted to go straight upstairs. Heather told how she said: “I want to kill myself.”
That was the last time she was seen alive.
Nicola Appleton, the mother of one of the boys at whose home Miss Bond was spending time earlier that night, told the court how in the weeks prior she too had discovered cuts on her son’s arm.
She said: “He said they all did it.”
“I told him it had to stop. He just said emos all do it.”
“He said he didn’t really want to hurt himself and the cuts weren’t very deep.”
“He had done it at school with a compass.”
Vanessa Everett, the headteacher at the Mascalls School were Miss Bond was regarded as an outstanding pupil, admitted there had been serious concerns over the spread of the emo lifestyle among students.
She said: “Hannah was known to me as a model student.”
“Everybody said she was a lovely, bubbly student who worked hard.”
“Right up to the weeks before she died Hannah was getting honours for her work in her lessons.”
“But we are very aware of this fashion trend which started with some of the older students.”
“Part of the problem it posts for us is it involves superficial self harm.”
“It can be difficult for us to differentiate between those students who were doing it because of serious psychological or emotional issues and those who are doing it for a fashion statement.”
“We wouldn’t have classified Hannah as one of those students with serious psychological or emotional problems.”
Recording a verdict of suicide, coroner Roger Sykes said: “She was a family friendly girl who was doing well as school.”
“A girl, aged 13 years, has taken her own life for no reason that could be regarded by anyone as sensible or justified and if in doing so she was thinking about how this would go down with those others who were involved with the emo fad; I just believe this a terrible tragic explanation for what happened.”
“It was not glamorous. It was a tragic loss of life.”
Visitors to the Miss Bond’s Bebo profile page are greeted with the words “Hi I’m Hannah and I’m addicted to My Chemical Romance especially Gerard Way”.
She even lists her hometown as “The Black Parade!!!”, and her playlist shows she has been repeatedly listening to 14 of the group’s hits.
She also asks friends to take part in an online vote on which member of My Chemical Romance is the sexiest.
The page is decorated with pictures of an emo girl with blood-spattered wrists after slashing herself in an apparent suicide bid.
Another picture shows a child’s exercise book scrawled with the words “Dear Diary, today I gave up…”.
She also glorifies in the slogan: “Brave is knowing that tomorrow isn’t a bright and happy future.”
Dozens of Miss Bond’s heartbroken friends have left tributes on her Bebo page.
One friend explicitly referred to the lyrics of Miss Bond’s favourite song when she wrote: “I’ll love you forever, I’ll never forget you, I’ll hold on to these memories till we meet again in the black parade.”
Another friend, Bonnie Price, wrote: “I miss you so much, when I found out I was devastated. I love you so much.”
Another added: “Black tears of death bring red tears of love and memories.”
My Chemical Romance have repeatedly come under fire for ‘glamorising’ suicide.
The band hit the mainsteam in October 2006 when their single Welcome To The Black Parade topped the charts.
Earlier hundreds of young devotees had queued all night outside London’s Oxford Street Virgin Megastore for a chance to see the band’s intimate in-store performance.
In the hit single the band’s frontman Gerard Way sings: “And though you’re dead and gone believe me your memory will carry on, will carry on.
“And in my heart I can’t contain it, the anthem won’t explain it.”
“Your misery and hate will kill us all. So paint it black and take it black.”
“Do or die, you’ll never make me, because the world will never take my heart. Though they try, they’ll never break me. We want it all, we wanna play this part.”
Leave comments on the news sites above to let them know what UTTER SHIT this is. If you have a brain you know its not the Band’s fault!

Are you serious?! This ranks about a ten on the stupid scale. So did everyone blaming Marily Manson for Columbine. Pathetic. Just pathetic.

OK I have a problem with this. First off, MCR is about saving lives not ending them. Second as a former suicide attempt person( I never hide that fact so that I can help other people who are going through it) I was EMO to the core when I was 14 and I am 28 now. I didn’t necessarily show it. I felt it. Emotional. I attempted suicide 3 times in 2 years. Starting when I was 12 and the last time when I was 14. I was a cutter. I have the scars to remind me everyday what it felt like to be 13 years old.
I listened to all kinds of music. Nirvana was my favorite then and Yes Kurt did kill himself but, the music I was listning to had NOTHING to do with the fact that I was messed up inside. These kids are reaching out. People just don’t recognize. They are depressed and confused and don’t know how to handle life. Emo..Emo..Emo.. Bull. I don’t care what my kids wear or what color they die their hair. Its how they express themselves. But if a person hears a KID say I just wanna die or I should just kill myself. LISTEN TO THEM. Happy kids don’t feel that way. Even if they are part of the A crowd. If they tell you how lame you are for asking so what at least you show interest. Straight up ask them what makes you think death is so much better? Why rush it we all get our chance in the end to die anyway why not make the most of what you got here? There is nothing GLAMOUROUS about dying, or having your stomach pumped, or watching yourself slowly bleed to death. Its a cry for help. Something isn’t right and it hasNOTHING to do with the music.

This story, while tragic as it is centered on the death of a young girl, is full of bologna. My Chemical Romance is AGAINST suicide. Their albums are about hope and faith in yourself. To say that they are partly to blame for this is ludacris.

I wonder what the guys in MCR would have to say about all this…
It also seems that the people who wrote this didn’t investigate the band very much, otherwise they would know what we all do: that MCR wants to save lives, not destroy them. I especially question their ‘knowledge’ of the band after calling them a “suicide cult band.” The mom also said that the Black Parade is where you go to die. This girl, her friends, and her mom need to check their source, because last I heard, The Black Parade is just Gerard’s explanation for the afterlife: when you die, your favorite memory comes and accompanies you to the afterlife, and in the case of the Black Parade as a concept album, seeing the Black Parade with his father was the patient’s favorite memory.
I’m also wondering if maybe this girl got the wrong message from MCR. How many suicidal people have you heard of that only got worse listening to them? I certainly haven’t heard of any. Maybe this girl took the lyrics too literally, and it sounds like her friends did too.
It’s so unfortunate that this had to happen, especially if it is MCR’s “fault” (by that I mean their music caused the girl to feel more suicidal instead of less. I personally feel that this girl was a moron). Music should make people feel happy, not suicidal.

First, sympathy to the family, and the friends of this girl.
Second, what the hell. I don’t understand this girl and her friends. After looking at her Bebo page, nothing makes sense.
Seems like she was a perfectly happy kid.
The parents should have done something about it when they found out about the cutting. That is not normal, whether done for ‘fashion’ [again, what the hell?!] or for real reasons.
As for ‘death cult’. That’s reminiscent of the shit the The Daily Mail wrote a while back.
Stuff like this irritates me. There are people that have real problems and commit suicide because life sucks so fucking much that they can’t see any other way out. Not because they are following a fashion, or falsely following the words of a band.
Excuse me if that sounded insensitive.

this is bullshit. mcr makes music. they dont make people kill themselves. they are against that. they have saved countless lives, why would they end one? i just think that the family needed someone to blame and they were the obvious choice

It’s funny how so many parents can’t seem to take responsibility for their own mistakes.
You’d think after seeing the marks, they’d put a total lockdown on everything she was doing, seeing friends, listening to music, going on the internet, at least until she decided to get out of this “phase.”
Secondly, I remember Eminem saying this, that “If the kid did something wrong and uses my music as his blame, there was something obviously very wrong with the kid in the first place.”
So, for a 13 year old “model” student to commit suicide, there had to have been something more than “Carry on.” in her lyrics to make her commit suicide.
It’s great how they picked out the negative lyrics, when if you read them, they arent even that negative. lmao.
It’s called being a parent, and blaming the media for your own ignorance is once again, showing that you were nothing more than that. Ignorant.
Music does not kill. Stop and really think about that. Music does NOT kill. It’s the people that do.
Plus, seriously, who lets their daughter walk away after saying they had to cut themselves to get initiated into emo. God, if my daughter said that, I’d think there was a cult happening, no? Then that’s where I pull out the psychologist, dammit

MCR IS ANTI-VIOLENCE and ANTI-SELF MUTILATION. The band went through all of these sorts of stuffs and they know that it’s something that will do us [the fans] nothing good in return.
“Suicide is a serious thing. And if you know anyone who is suicidal, you need to get them help. No one should be in pain. Everyone should love themselves. Like I love you all.” -Gerard Way

okay so heres my two cents.
my heart goes out to this family this is a tragic and completely horrible thing to happen. but what they really need is not something to blame as the dailymail was so quick to jump in with (which i think the the dailymail just wanted another negitive thing to say about my chem cause its obvious there is a on-going hate there),
they need someone to explain to them what fuckin “emo” is (which i think is about as dead as grunge/punk). they need a knowlagable person, who is a fan of mcr and has been though hard shit such as Samantha Potts, who has a decent head on their shoulders to explain what exactly the black parade is and what mcr stand for as a whole. as clearly they missenterperated what they are all about.
mcr is: hope, resiliance, life. the aim of music like theirs is to prove to us fans that other people have been there before, people will be there in the future, but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel even if at that moment you feel like there is not.
to me it just seems that the dailymail forced their oppinions on the family and because they havent been told otherwise by people who actually know what they are talking about they are inclined to agree.
this whole situation makes me so sad that such a young life was taken, but it makes me angry that tabloids can be so judgemental in matters they dont understand to blame a “genre” of music and fasion, and single out ONE particular band. its ludicis. that child obviously had issues that were more than face value people immeadiatly around her missed and i think its wrong to blame people she probably never had the chance to meet for her death.
i could go on but ill stop there…. anyway. yeah.

if listening to My Chem made her more suicidal, why listening to them in the first place if it makes you feel that bad?
I mean it’s okay if a song make you feel sad and things, but making it kill yourself? come on..
And even if MCR would sing about suicide (I know that they don’t, but IF) I wouldn’t kill myself because of that. There are in fact bands that do sing about suicide and death, why don’t blame them? ><
So in that case she wasn’t as ‘normal’ as they write she is, if she did it because of My Chemical romance or because of all the “emo” bull.
I mean, gaw.
I think it’s deeper then that but whatever.
Maybe she had problems and things like that nobody knew about?
Who knows?
But balming in MCR is just stupid and they didn’t even get the right facts about neither what Emo is or what My Chemical Romance want’s to say with the band and what they think of suicide..
Gosh I wish they would get the rights facts first.
It’s just like my parents, they awlays see the badn things and ignore the good.
MCR got lots of songs, for an example Famous Last Words, why didn’t they bring that up?
“Do or die, you’ll never make me, because the world will never take my heart. Though they try, they’ll never break me. We want it all, we wanna play this part.”
And how in earth does that encourage suicide?!
None of their lyrics does, in fact. -___-”
I don’t get it.

I’ve been a fan of My Chemical Romance long before the black parade was released, and MCR saved me. I was suicidal before I heard their music. To say that MCR caused death is fucking insain. They SAVE lives, this girl was trying to prove something, her parents can blame their poor parenting skills on a band if they wish, if her father saw cuts on her arms he should have gotton her HELP. When I cut, they were crys for help…and you know what? My parents got help for me and I’m alive today. My Chemical Romance got me through some hard times… they never wanted me to take my life, they saved me.

“i am not afraid to keep on living”
how exactly does this promote suicide?
its a line from a mcr song which fans proudly state when people link my chemical romance to suicide.
The parents are just looking for someone to blame besides themselves.
Music doesn’t kill.

WTF O.o
my chem is not emo!!!
like Beka says what means “i am not afraid to keep on living”
that is not emo
my chemical romance is a band that want to save your life…
the parents are idiot to think that…
they can not afront that his child is dead…
is not fault of my chemical romance is fault of her parents
maybe they make her life a shit i dont know…
BUT THE CASE IS THAT PEOPLE SAY “MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IS EMO”
now i told the true MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IS NOT EMOOOO!!
if you dont know about his music, don´t say lies…
that all…
LONG LIFE TYO MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE think about it, they want to save youre life….

This kind of thing really annoys me soooo much. When soicety cannot understand something they blame it for everything. Like the term “emo” they do not understand truely what it means therefore it is blamed for everything. i am so fed up of people judging me on what genre of music i listen to because they dont understand it. This is so ignorant and simple minded i actually cant believe it. Because a girl likes a band like mcr it does not mean she will comitt suicide, its absolutely pathetic.
its a totally awfull thing to happen to someone no doubt and i dread to think what her family are going through but u cannot blame music for the death of someone, it is ludacris. As a fan of mcr i totally 100% think the press have completely blown this out of proportion and made the whole situation seem worse. To be completely honest with you mcr and bands like them have helped me through any hard times in my life there aim is to make people feel less alone by relating to them. I hope they do not get blamed for this case and justice is served, and more importantly i hope them stupid idiots who wrote this story see how wrong they are. Not only is it stupid what they have written it is offensive and is quite derogatory to every MCR fan as it suggests we all want to kill ourselves which is definately not the case and i am so ashamed that someone would actually think that.

MCR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS..
if she’s really a FAN..

MCR isnt emo..

gerard way even said that they arent emo..TRUE FANS KNOW THAT..and things like that..and they arent suicidal..“Suicide is a serious thing. And if you know anyone who is suicidal, you need to get them help. No one should be in pain. Everyone should love themselves. Like I love you all.” -Gerard Way

bullshit, ok look………..
if your such a unabservant BAD parent that when your child is acting strange and TELLS YOU they are going to go kill themselves and your to LAZY to go talk to them or be conserned then i dont think you needed to have kids i think you are just plane UNFIT. if you cant take responsability for your actions or lack there of and have to blame a band for the death of your own child you need to seek some kind of councling because i can tell you right now music cannot make you kill yourself. and if you the child are not smart enugh to think for yourself and know music is for FUN and ENJOYMENT then i implore you not to listen to it untill you grow up a lil and learn self control. if the rest of us can listen to anything we want and be as happy as ever then that indicates right there that somthing ELSE was already wrong with your child and you were just to busy to relize it. mabey you should look at yourself before you are so quick to blame others for your own mistakes.

blaming mcr for what these kids do is like blaming some one who lives across the country for my arm breaking mcr does not know these people and even if they did they would not dare to hurt them so leave mcr alone and get a life brandi instead of talking about other peoples life and blaming mcr thats just stupid

Okay so my profile name is Revenge so that means I’m gonna take out Revenge over a word…come on. Sorry to hear the girl committed suicide but MCR is not to blame nor any other EMO fashion or form. Apparently anyone who cuts their wrists has problems. No offense but that’s why they make depression pills. I find this is a lame excuse for the parents to sue something she listened to. MCR doesn’t even sound suicidal. Wow whatever MCR is amazing!

I understand parent’s want something to blame for their daughters death… but blaming a band is ridiculous. If anything mcrs music helped her through her tough times; and should be thanked. They speak and raise people up, lift them from the pain they are suffering in life. The parents NEED to take the time to relax and realize she made this choice all on her own. End of story.

It’s amazing how stupid the things people will believe and blame as an excuse can be. Do they really think that listening to an ANTI-suicide band and being into a certain style of expression will make someone want to kill themselves? Obviously, there was something else going on beforehand. I definitely agree with the other people commenting here.

This girl was going through things alot deeper than simply “listening to a band”. Fingerpointing musicians is only the result of passing on guilt. This girl simply suffered a tragedy that occurs in the minds of teenagers who can’t understand (much like I didn’t understand) that the life of a teenager is just a drop in the bucket compared to the life you live beyond that age.
Personally I can’t stand MCR’s music, but they are in no way responsible for this death.

I know that the band had nothing to do with her suicide. But if I had a little girl I wouldn’t want to believe she was unhappy because I would feel like I failed as a father and that would kill me inside. There is no reason to be mad over this or at anyone. She wanted a black parade. Leave her at peace

I think this is total bullshit. The kid obiously had OTHER problems in her life. I mean, seriously?! The parents are blaming a BAND?! I mean, I have sympathy for them and all, but really, they obviously didn’t listen to their kid. Kids just don’t KILL themselves over music. And anyway, My Chem is all about SAVING lives, not destroying them!! It says in the article that she was hanging out with her boyfriend and her other friends just hours before her death. Hmmm…. perhaps THEY did something? I mean, just a thought!! Like seriously, her boyfriend could’ve like attacked or like raped her or something?! It said that on the car ride home, she said she ‘needed a cuddle’? I totally feel sorry for the family, but at the same time, i’m angry at them, especially the dad. When he saw she was cutting herself, i think he should’ve gotten her help. Like Gerard said, “No one desirves to be unhappy”, least of all this poor girl. I hope she had her Black Parade after all…

Clearly this girl had other issues going on. Killing yourself because of music? thats so stupid. It sounds to me llikes\ something was going on in her school/friend social life, and she just wasnt telling her parents.
MCR IS AGINST SUICIDE
i listen to MCR and i am a 14 yr old who has thought of suicide. MCR’S SONGS STOPPED ME FROM DOING THIS
to me, it sounds like Hannah was feeling pushed to get strraight A’s and to be the best by someone, and she couldnt take it anymore. (no effence hannas family and friends)
cutting (im my opinion) is when something emotionally drives you to do it, and it is not the BAND or MUSICS fault. This is like saying, that because you listen to rap, your in a gang.
Clearly, the parents didnt research MCR good enough.
Samantha and Ann, i agree withyou all the way.
I give my sympthay to the family, but seriously? WHat. THe. Hell.

Gerard Way started the band because he witnessed 9/11 and saw what horrid state people were in and realized he needed to help people instead of waste his life as a comic book store clerk. ‘Skylines and Turnstiles’ was their first song as a band and they wrote it in reverence of 9/11. So the next time your gunna make up shit to support your cause, do a better background check.

Okay. I know this is a tragity but MCR’s lyrics aren’t meant to make a teeny bopper go kill herself. Those lyrics are there to help, to tell people it’s okay a be messed up, no one is perfect! Yes it may be dark and about death. But it’s not there fault, in the slightest that a young girl took the lyrics so literally she took her life. To me, it’s quite selfish and so incredibly stupid.

Okay, this must be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Their songs are inspirational, they’ve taught me that it doesn’t matter whether you’re accepted or not, that you will carry on and the better days will come. I’m telling this from my personal experience, four years ago, I wanted to kill myself. I was sick of my life, of my family, of my high school where everybody was joking about my looks (I’ve changed hairstyles very often and I was s loner) and they’ve pretty much hated me and making me feel like I’m not good enough . So, one day, I went into the bathroom, took the razor blade, and started cutting my wrist. Than my phone rang (my ringtone was “Welcome to the Black Parade”) and I just stopped cutting my wrist. I’ve remembered what my favorite band has thought me over the years and I went out of the bathroom feeling stronger than ever. I can proudly say that MCR has helped me with my depression and that they have saved my life. So, this is just silly. That poor girl probably had some mental problems because she was way to obsessed with emo stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love emo people, but I never was one of them. I am and will be obsessed with the MCR for the rest of my life because they are worth it. Gerard is my role model, because he had his ups and downs, and he’s still around, he made it, and so can anyone of us.

“She told her dad it was an emo initiation”
“She promised to never do it again”
“She called emo a fashion and I thought it was normal”
“She was a bit moody but I thought it was just because she’s a teenager”
and my favorite….drumroll please….
“She had everything to live for”
Who was to blame here? THE PARENTS!!! They clearly knew NOTHING about their own daughter, nor did they bother to take the time to look into any of her activities. It was obvious that there was something going on with her, something that wasn’t right, and they ignored it, were oblivious to it. She probably only lived as long as she did BECAUSE she listened to MCR. I bet they did a MUCH better job at keeping her alive than her worthless parents. It’s tragic, truly awful and it breaks my heart, but if the parents want to put the blame somewhere they should by a big ass mirror and stare into that! MCR saved my fucking life! I am PROUD to say that my kids listen to them because they are exactly the kind of men I would want them to look up to. And for the record, I’m a homeschooling mom of teens, not an emo teenager (though there’s nothing wrong with being one, just saying.)

Everyone goes through shit in their lives, and for me, listening to MCR actually makes me, and countless others, feel BETTER about what they’re going through. Their message is all about loving yourself and NOT about self-harm or suicide. MCR are not emo, and they certainly don’t encourage that ‘lifestyle’, if you want to call it that.
Their lyrics have been taken out of context here and they’ve been purposely made to look bad due to ignorance on the writer’s part!

It’s not a fashion statement it’s a fucking death wish. How the hell could he think it was just a fad!!!!!! I slit myself only once because as soon as my mom found out, she slapped me and asked me why. She didn’t take the “fad” answer and made me get help. That was the best thing she has ever done for me. She heard my silent screams and helped me. THAT is what the dad should have done. Blaming it on music at all is horrible and pisses me off as well as the fact that nobody that was involved with making this stupid story has no idea what they are talking about, especially the girl IF she committed suicide because she thought MCR told her to, which I highly doubt. “And though you’re dead and gone believe me your memory will carry on, will carry on.” That quote gave me the hope that I mean something to someone and will not be forgotten. “Your misery and hate will kill us all.” DONT BE MISERABLE BECAUSE IT JUST HURTS THE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT! “So paint it black and take it back.” Don’t let anybody take “it”, whatever it is that is important to you. “Do or die, you’ll never make me, because the world will never take my heart. Though they try, they’ll never break me. We want it all, we wanna play this part.” Don’t let anybody tell you what to do. Be strong. That’s what we all want to be. Don’t get me wrong, I feel horrible about what happened but no emotionally/ mentally stable person would die because a song told them to. There has got to be something more than they are telling us. BTW, her seeming perfectly happy, I don’t buy that. I mean, she DID commit suicide. There must have been SOME sign. Like her slicing her wrists.
